One more sea day then the much-anticipated transit of the Panama Canal! Astronaut Robert Thirsk gave another lecture today; “Everything about Space is Trying to Kill Astronauts”. I found the lecture very interesting and had no idea that the medical challenges in the space program were just as difficult as the technical challenges. The effects of long-term weightlessness and exposure to low level radiation can be very damaging; bone density loss, vision impairment and muscle atrophy amongst other things all need to be solved before really long missions (like going to Mars) can be attempted.
