We drove north from Stow-on-the-Wold a few days ago to South Shields, the town of my birth. South Shields is a coastal town in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England. It is on the south bank of the mouth of the River Tyne. Historically, it was known in Roman times as Arbeia.

We checked in to the Little Haven Hotel; we’ve stayed at this hotel quite a few times and like it primarily for its location, right at the mouth of the River Tyne and right on Little Haven Beach. It’s always a nostalgic visit for me; as a child I spent many summers on Little Haven Beach, long before the hotel was built.

The top floor of the hotel contains 3 suites and for this visit we have the Lord Collingwood Suite; he was a local naval hero who fought in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The suite offers superb views both up the river and also out to the North Sea.

The breakfast conservatory in the Little Haven has great views of the river and we love to sit and watch the ferries come and go over breakfast. However, the buffet and other food items are terrible at best
