Sunday, January 29th, 2023 Queen Victoria, at sea

Updated: Jun 22, 2023

Today the weather is fine, the sea is dead calm, and we are making our way north towards Mexico – currently we are off the coast of Costa Rica. The ship is being mobbed by a flock of Brown Boobie birds; these amazing birds are superbly adapted to skim above the surface of the ocean for very long periods of time looking for the occasional flying fish that are stirred up by the motion of the ship. The Boobies can also be seen flying about 30 feet off the surface and then diving at great speed, hitting the ocean like a bullet – in order to reach fish some distance below the surface. Another great lecture today by the Canadian Astronaut, Robert Thirsk entitled “Mission to Mars”. Mr. Thirsk discussed the various technical and medical problems that need to be solved to enable a deep-space mission to Mars. News to me: towards the end of 2024 a manned mission to travel around the moon and back is planned, just like Apollo 8 in 1968 – and then a manned mission to the moon in 2025. These efforts are all in preparation for a manned mission to Mars towards the end of 2035. I really enjoyed this lecture and its very evident that Mr. Thirsk believes very passionately in space exploration. In the evening we dined at the alternative restaurant location where the theme was “Bamboo”, an Asian fusion menu. We’ve had the Bamboo menu several times before on Cunard cruises and it has always been very good, tonight lived up to the reputation.
