Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 Queen Victoria, at sea
Updated: Jun 20, 2023
A single sea day between islands, this is a good rhythm to allow a little recovery and recharge time before the next shore day. Today we enjoyed and excellent lunch at the Verandah Stake House on board Queen Victoria with our friends Ray and Christine; as Cunard Diamond members we are entitled to a free lunch at this restaurant for each leg of the world voyage (there is normally charge of $25 per person). In the evening we attended, or attempted to attend, the captains cocktail party for all those doing the full world voyage – this was a special one as this is the centennial celebration voyage, it’s 100 years since Cunard first did a full world voyage. We’ve never been fans of these cocktail parties as it consists of elbow-to-elbow passengers all jostling for position trying to get a free drink. With the recent trend in Covid cases on board, we were even less inclined to attend. Never-the-less we went along, and it was pretty much as expected; there was some open space at the back of the deck but, inexplicably, not enough chairs for everyone to sit. There was a large cake with a world map and the ships itinerary created from icing on the top. In the background there was an ice sculpture of, what looked like, the Golden Gate Bridge. The pastry chefs on the ship are very talented. We left before the captain had finished his speech. Tonight was Burn’s Night and so I wore my tartan tie, there were a few kilts about, and a small portion of haggis was served in the dining room.
