We’ve now begun to head northwest toward Indonesia and the weather remains very hot and very humid, the seas a very calm. A new crop of lecturers boarded in Darwin and today we attended an excellent talk by Captain Rick Reynolds a former British Airways Concorde pilot (actually copilot). Rick will be delivering a series of 6 lectures based on a pamphlet-type book written by a Concorde flight engineer. We attended a similar series a few years ago on Queen Mary 2 given by a different pilot but based on the same information. Nevertheless our fascination with Concorde remains strong and will try to attend of Rick’s lectures; today he talked about “The Magic of Concorde” and discussed everything from the technology to the speed that made the plane so special. In the afternoon we attended another “master class” given by our favorite bar tender, Ricardo at the gin bar. To we learned about Grappa, a spirit that is distilled from the leftovers of wine production, and Pisco a spirit that is distilled from wine like Brandy but is not aged in any barrels. Pisco is from Ricardo’s home country, Peru, and so he was especially proud to present it – in fact this was the first time that these two spirits have been presented in a master class on a Cunard ship. The format was the same as previous tastings with the 14 guests sitting at the gin bar; we tasted 4 neat spirits followed by 4 Pisco cocktails – with Tapas served along the way. We enjoyed the event but neither of us would be ordering Grappa or Pisco drinks any time soon.
