Monday, January 23rd, 2023 Queen Victoria, at sea

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

A very nice improvement in the weather today as we make our way south into the Caribbean Sea on our third and final sea day before St. Martin; 75F, gentle breeze, calm seas. Our other table companions called to say they both had tested positive forcovid and that they would be isolating in their cabin for at least 7 days; I really felt sorry for them, knowing what Sandra had just been through. A few others in out Facebook group had also reported testing positive. The medical center continues to send me a covid test kit every few days, I think this is their protocol for those who have shared a cabin with someone who has tested positive – I tested negative again today. We attended a fantastic lecture today by Robert Thirsk, a Canadian astronaut (medical doctor and engineer) who has flown a mission on the shuttle Columbia and spent 6 months on the International Space Station. This first lecture gave an overview of the kinds of things astronauts do to train and while they are in space; Mr. Thirsk spent about 5 minutes discussing in detail the first 30 seconds or so of his space shuttle launch – I was in absolute awe! He also covered some interesting aspects of his 6 months stint in the ISS; how to eat food without particles flying all over the interior of the station, how to go to the toilet without particles flying all over the inside of the station and how it’s possible to sleep in any orientation you like in the wait-less environment. In the afternoon we attended our first afternoon tea – a Cunard tradition, with our friends Ray and Christine. Small finger sandwiches with the crusts cut off (what do they do with all the crusts I wonder?), cakes and of course fruit scones with clotted cream and jam – all washed down with as much tea and as you can swallow. We noticed that all of the crew were now waring face masks, and during the tea the captain announced that the ship was instituting stricter covid protocols due to an increase in the number of positive covid cases – everyone on board is now required to wear a face mask when walking about inside the ship, this is the same as the protocol when we sailed in January 2022.
