Saturday, May 6th, 2023 Largs, Scotland
Today was a very special day, the Coronation of King Charles III. To mark the event we bought special napkins and flags, and a few snacks to sustain us through the televised coverage of the event.
In the evening we met family at Nardini’s for dinner, followed by ice-cream from their gigantic selection. The Nardini family moved to Scotland in 1890 and established a small café in Largs, later building the current café which opened in 1935 and adding a full restaurant in 1950. The cafe was often described as the most elaborate of its kind in Scotland with its facilities providing the height of comfort and luxury. It soon became one of the most popular businesses of its kind in the West of Scotland. I can vaguely remember visiting Nardini’s as a very young child, and we visited often when we lived in Scotland. The art deco building and interior has changed little over the years, if you go to Largs you have to go to the institution that is Nardini’s.
I especially like the black and white picture in the collection below that shows Nardini’s in the 1940’s with the Moorings building off in the distance.
