Sunday, January 8th, 2023 At Sea Queen Mary 2

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

A very rough night with not much sleep, it was 11:30AM before we finally got out of bed this morning and this, along with another 1-hour clock advance at noon, has really messed up our daily routine. We missed breakfast and could only get coffee in the Corinthia. The Queen Mary 2 has a very extensive library, and the books are presented in beautiful, brass lined, cabinets; it’s also one of the only truly quiet places on the ship. It’s often hard to find a seat in the library, but this afternoon we were lucky enough to find two window seats and passed a nice quiet hour.

It’s not well known that Homer Simpson is actually immortalized on the Queen Mary 2; there is a very small relief carving of Homer on one of the gigantic bronze panels that line the central corridor on deck 2. It takes some careful inspection to find Homer, he can be found sitting in his armchair watching TV just at the feet of the Statue of Liberty! It should be noted that the artist who created these magnificent bronze panels secretly inserted the small image of Homer Simpson, Cunard knew nothing about it. It was only after the panels were installed and ship was off on her voyages that the secret was revealed; initially Cunard ordered Homer removed, but a passenger outcry saved his bacon!

In the early evening the cabin steward brought a covid test kit and a letter to our cabin informing us of the need to show a negative covid test result between 8AM and 9AM the next morning, in order to embark the Queen Victoria on January 11th in Southampton. We expected to have to do a covid test but assumed it would be using our own kits and that we’d record the results as we did prior to getting on this ship in New York, i.e. by taking a picture of the kit showing the negative result. The letter informed us that we would need to show our test results to the cabin steward. In order to reduce our anxiety we decided to take covid tests, using our own kits, this evening; these would not be any good for proving status to Cunard but at least we’d have an early indication of any potential problems tomorrow morning. We both tested negative.
