Friday February 21st, 2025 Pio XI Glacier, Chile
Updated: Mar 6
Having steamed about 20 miles up a narrow fjord throughout the early hours of this morning, the Queen Mary finally approached the Pio XI Glacier at about 6AM this morning. The glacier was named by early Spanish sailors in honor of the pope at the time, it’s also known as the Brüggen Glacier and its one of the few glaciers in the world that is not shrinking. Unfortunately it was still pretty dark as we approached the glacier so visibility was poor and things got worse when the captain announced that he would not be taking the ship any closer to the ice wall; the ice floating around the ship was quite widespread and the pieces were quite large – some like mini icebergs with bits of black rock embedded in them. We were still about 2 miles from the glacier when the ship turned, and we headed back up the fjord. It was disappointing but understandable.
