This morning we had an 8:50AM flight from Amsterdam and so our taxi from the hotel picked us up very early. As we were flying business class, we got access to the KLM lounge which was comfortable, and the coffee was great. Our short flight direct to Southampton was uneventful – which is always a blessing.

It’s our first time staying at the Southampton Harbour Hotel and as we checked in, I started to gain some very positive first impressions; sleek and modern, shaped like a large luxury yacht docked in the harbor. The staff were extremely helpful; as we were very early for hotel check-in, we had expected to have to leave our luggage and take off into town – but they had no problem letting us into our room. The room was very well appointed though a little small, it even came with a bottle of local gin; we paid a little extra for a harbor view which was very nice. We are staying here just one night before boarding the Queen Mary 2 tomorrow to head for New York via Le Havre.

For our one night in Southampton we chose to dine at Bacaro, a short walk from the hotel – we had eaten here a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so we were keen to see if it was still as good. The restaurant was much as we remembered it and the menu had changed little, consisting of Italian dished with an emphasis on small plates and shared platters – it was excellent.
